Inside Out #003

Inside Out #003

Haven't done one of these for a while!

Friend Lamps
Lights scattered, pointing out shop signs and patches of path and road,
glowing with a slight security.
The night is dark and threatens to confuse but the balls of gold protect and provide,
strengthening confidence in those who feel their rays.
Friends are like street lamps in the dark.

Get your priorities straight...

I just find this statement quite good...

Instead of saying “I don’t have time” try saying “it’s not a priority,” and see how that feels. Often, that’s a perfectly adequate explanation. I have time to iron my sheets, I just don’t want to. But other things are harder. Try it: “I’m not going to edit your résumé, sweetie, because it’s not a priority.” “I don’t go to the doctor because my health is not a priority.” If these phrases don’t sit well, that’s the point. Changing our language reminds us that time is a choice. If we don’t like how we’re spending an hour, we can choose differently.

Grizzle

A bit sad today as due to all the flooding back home it was best not to risk going back and getting stranded there. It's all getting pretty high. At this stage my family aren't likely to actually get the house flooded but I expect they won't be able to go anywhere by the end of the weekend. It's so weird to imagine it without actually getting to go home and see it all. Even with the pictures it seems so surreal. So lucky they are far from the worst affected as towns not far away are being evacuated and a lot of roads are closed. Such a grizzly day in Melbourne today too.

I've decided that I have an addictive personality. Kyle and Jackie'O were talking about it on the radio the other day. It seems to involve things that I tend to do. Once you start doing something and get into a routine you kind of can't help but continue this routine as you become addicted to it. Or at least that is my perception of it. I seem to have this problem a bit with things. Like the chocolate. Definitely classify my self as a chocoholic even if I do keep my indulgence as minimum as possible. And the gym. I think I classify as a bit of a gym junkie. My routine in general. Obsessive about many things. But oh well. I'm quite happy to be that way.

There's this new show on FOX 8 (oh the joys of having pay tv) that I've recorded the last couple of weeks and finally sat down and watched today. It's called Smash. Possibly my new favourite show! It's about this group of people putting together a musical on Marilyn Monroe and all the behind the scenes dramas. It's absolutely fantastic! Especially loving the character Karen played by Katharine McPhee and her boyfriend Dev played by Raza Jaffrey.

Praying for the flood affected.

Late rambling

Decidedly sleep is quite an inconvenience. As I attempt to get some work complete I'm struggling to stay awake though if it were possible not to need to sleep, that I wouldn't actually struggle later today because I'm going to be surviving on a few hours sleep I would happily not sleep at all.

It's flooding back home at the moment. Not my actually home but surrounding areas. It's frustrating and amazing to think that five years ago if you told us that it would be flooding now we would have laughed. I remember wondering if we would ever really get rain again as we struggled through a dry dry drought. We never thought we would be complaining about having to much rain in any near future. Yet here we are and we're just hoping there isn't to much more to come for now. Crazy! And I love how they have the news reporters wading through knee high water and then have these little kids playing in the flood waters in the background. I know as a child of course that's exactly what you want to be doing.... but isn't that one of the things they say is quite dangerous. I'm sure they say not to play in flood waters....

It's just a tad annoying though as I planned to head home this weekend but am slightly concerned about getting stuck back there! That's probably a very slim worst case scenario I suppose. So keen to go home and see the family though. After staying down last weekend I miss them too much!

Went to my first ever game of soccer last night! The Australia vs. Saudi Arabia at AAMI Park. Never been inside there before. Was a rather exciting match to watch! 24,000 spectators provided and exciting atmosphere. We weren't looking so good until the middle of the second half when Australia came back from being down 1 - 2 to scoring three goals in the space of about five minutes! It was intensely exciting!

Best get back to it....

Sunday Summary 26/2/2012

This week I continued to obsess over Drake and Rihanna, Take Care but I have also been listening to the Bluejuice album, Company. Been enjoying that quite a lot. Also song I got on Triple J Unearthed, Rumour by This Sanctuary. If you enjoy a bit of Paramore you will probably enjoy this track!

I completed my third book for the year! Jason Akermanis biography Open Season. You can read my thoughts in the latest The Flave. So now I have began reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

The week in thousands of words...
Overheard in the MX is always entertaining.

Delicious Sunday Breakfast!

Finally got to watch Water for Elephants (read about it in The Flave) and have began reading The Help.

Oh how I love sugar!

Hope you've had a great weekend!

Gen D?

The other night I happened to see some of Adam Hills show on ABC where he, as usual, some rather interesting guests. The Adam Hills on Gordon Street on Wednesday (watch the full episode here) featured the author Alain de Botton. He's written book titles such as Status Anxiety, The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work and his latest published work, Religion for Atheists. What interested me was his opening comment "we are the distracted generation". He went on to talk about our constant obsession with our smart phones, constantly having them out and needing to check them even in the middle of face to face conversations with other people. And I just thought that is such a fantastic way to describe our generation. So rarely would I find myself capable of just sitting down and doing only one thing at the one time. I am forever multi-tasking and just generally in capable of concentrating all of my attention on one specific thing. If I'm doing homework I've always got music on in the background or maybe even a movie. If I sit down to actually watch a movie most of the time I will have my laptop in front of me or a notebook nearby. Same when I sit down to watch a TV show. Even when I'm sitting reading a book I sometimes struggle to keep on track with the story as my eyes read the words and my mind is off somewhere else entirely thinking up all sorts of things. The only time I actually just do one thing is when I'm driving. And even then you tend to have the radio on so really your still not only doing one thing. Being time poor forces us to squash everything together or maybe just the fact that there are all these different technologies to use and so many more things that you can be doing that we just don't have time to do that we tend to do so many things at once. Or just trying to do the less enjoyable things with some enjoyment. Sometimes I think it's clever that we can do so much multi-tasking. Sometimes it probably makes us take longer to get things done in the long run as we spend so much time being entirely distracted. Even as I sit here writing my blog my mind is off thinking about the other things I should be doing right now along with watching Tangled on the television. "We [really (or at least if I'm anything to go by as similar to a large amount of the generation)] are the distracted generation".

On an unrelated but nostalgic side note: before I was watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Such a classic film that I'm sure I watched over a hundred times as a child. It's funny though, the things that you didn't notice as a kid that you understand when you watch the film again so much older. All those bits that you found boring when you were little because you just didn't understand what was going on. It's quite funny. Definitely a childhood favourite. In light of this I re-created the wrapper which I will feature in a future blog.
